Questions To Ask A Commercial Construction Company
Choosing the right commercial construction company for your project is no easy task. There are multiple choices, and with such a large investment, you want to be sure you’ll be treated right and get the quality build you deserve. If you’re looking for a contractor, there are some questions that can help you narrow down your choices. You can use these as a starting point in a consultation meeting to help you separate the good from the bad.
(1) Tell Me About Your Commercial Construction Company
We’d bet most interviews (regardless of the industry) start out with this question, and for good reason. It’s always a good idea to get a feel for the company and its history right off the bat. Ideally, you’re looking to hear for answers that point to the company having a long history in business working on the types of projects you’re considering.
(2) Can I See Your Portfolio?
Any good construction company will have a portfolio for you to look at upon request. This would include information about past projects they’ve completed. Look for work that’s similar to what you envision for your project. If you notice that there isn’t much overlap between what you need and what they’ve done before, it might not be a good fit.
(3) Are You Licensed And Insured?
We can’t say it enough – do not go into business with companies that do not have the proper licensure or insurance! You may be tempted by cheaper pricing or a “family” discount from a friend of a friend. But, the risk just isn’t worth it! A reputable company will always have the proper paperwork for the type of construction they do. Check for this upfront before wasting anymore time.
(4) Tell Me About Your Project Managers
A successful project is the result of good project management. So, don’t be shy about asking questions about the project manager(s)! You might ask about their communication style, track record, or how they handle subcontractors and site supervision. Keeping the project on track will largely be this person’s responsibility, so it’s best to be thorough.
(5) What Sets You Apart From The Rest?
Give the company you’re interviewing a chance to earn your business by pointing out their strengths. What do they do that’s different from the rest? Whether it’s timely communication or post-construction follow up, they should be able to easily point to something outstanding.
While this isn’t a complete list of questions to ask your potential contractor, these should help you get an idea if a company is a solid choice that you might consider.
