What Is Procurement Management?
Starting a construction project can be an exciting time for a client – albeit a bit scary as well. Expectations are high, and we take customer satisfaction seriously. One of the keys to our success is our pre-construction process. During this time, we go through several steps that help to get the project off on the right foot so to speak. For example, to keep projects on schedule and avoid delays due to material lead times, we spend time upfront in procurement management. So, what exactly is this important step? Let’s find out.
Procurement Management, Explained
Procurement is a fancy word for “getting things,” and in construction, this refers to the things we need to complete a project. That would include materials, equipment, and even labor. In many cases, we can’t simply run down to the local hardware store to get everything we need in stock. As we learned during the pandemic, some materials can become quickly unavailable or expensive due to supply chain issues. It’s our job to keep track of those trends and know which materials need to be ordered far in advance. We have spent decades building our vendor relationships so that we can get the best price and availability – using multiple sources if needed. In addition, we have a wide network of fully vetted subcontractors that we contact and schedule. That way, when the project begins we know we’ll have the materials we need and the people to install them.
Plan Ahead For Smoother Sailing
Procurement management is an important part of our pre-construction planning because we can appropriately schedule tasks as materials become available. This ensures the project moves forward without long lag times and generally makes the whole project run more smoothly. Even if hiccups arise, we can usually adjust around them if we have done this step correctly.
