Why You Should Always Hire A Licensed Contractor

With material prices soaring and other commodities like gas and food prices on the rise, it might be tempting to hire the cheapest contractor for your next project. However, if they are not a licensed contractor, it could end up costing you in the long run. We always recommend hiring an appropriately licensed contractor for the job because it protects you and your project from costly issues down the road.

Licensing Ensures Appropriate Knowledge

As part of the licensing process, a contractor must demonstrate knowledge of construction principles, and building code. Without that assurance, you’re just taking someone’s word for it. Plus, in NC, any project over $30,000 requires the use of a licensed contractor. What’s more, if your project is in that scope and you hire an unlicensed contractor, you would be breaking the law.

Only A Licensed Contractor Can Get Insurance

A contractor must have a license in order to be bonded and insured. Insurance protects both the contractor and the client, so you definitely don’t want to be dealing with an unlicensed and uninsured company!

Protection If Problems Arise

If the job doesn’t turn out how you expected, you may have trouble getting an unlicensed contractor to correct the issue. In addition, if the work isn’t done properly, it costs even more money to repair it through another company. Saving money upfront could end up costing you much more money in the end.

Choose Wisely To Protect Your Property Value

Using an unlicensed contractor can actually lower your property value. Without a license, a contractor cannot get permits. As a result, inspections can turn up serious issues. Looking to lease or sell your property? Projects completed without permits may need to be redone.

For these (and many other) reasons, we simply cannot advise anyone to work with unlicensed contractors. Above all, choosing the right contractor for the job sets you up for success and limits your risk. For more information about our experience and qualifications, feel free to set up a consultation. We look forward to working with you on your next project!
